The Humanitarian Doctor
Dr. Jay Sampat a practising Bhatia doctor was conferred upon the “Humanitarian Award” by the Indo-American Press Club at the club’s 5th Media Conference held in Atlanta, USA.
Dr. Jay N. Sampat was born in Tirupur in southern India. He received his medical degree from Kasturba Medical College in Manipal and has now been practising since decades. This compassionate internal medicine specialist served at refugee camps in Bangladesh during the Indo-Pak war of 1971.His work then took him to Uganda, East Africa. The underprivileged people there loved his work, but due to the turmoil in the country, their journey took him and his wife to USA.
In the US, he chose to work in a remote place in Arizona, treating the less privileged sections of the society. His work in Winslow, Arizona, one of the poorest counties with high unemployment was lauded by the hospital board for his humanitarian services and by the Mayor of Winslow. A day in the calendar year is celebrated in Winslow as “Dr.Sampat Day”, a mark of honor conferred upon him by the then Mayor of Winslow.
Dr.Sampat gradually moved to Atlanta, Georgia and continued his benevolent services as a doctor with an open door policy where no one was turned away from receiving medical care due to lack of insurance or money. He started free clinics at a local church taking care of uninsured and under-insured patients.
A compassionate humanitarian like Dr.Sampat is what makes the Bhatia samaaj known for its benevolence!
